Prayer Corner - Praise God Who Helps His People

Posted on Aug 03, 2010

Psalm 147 – Praise God Who Helps His People.

This is an especially remarkable song. In it the greatness and goodness of God are celebrated.

"Praise the Lord for it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is wholesome."

David finds joy in extolling the One who has been so gracious to him.

This Psalm is divided into three portions. In verses 1-6 God is applauded for building up Jerusalem and blessing its mourners. In 7-11 God is praised for His provision for the lowly and for His pleasure in them; and then from 12-20 God is magnified for His work on behalf of His people and for the power of His Word in nature and in grace.

This whole Psalm is an invitation to praise God and I invite you to read it. And as you do, praise God for His general goodness to the world and for His mercy to His church.

"It is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is wholesome."

To praise God is 'Good' for a number of reasons:

  • It is what God commands and must not be neglected.
  • It raises our heart from earth to heaven; it joins us with the choir above.
  • By it we acknowledge indebtedness to God.
  • For it we are likely to receive a great reward.

To praise God is 'Pleasant' because:

  • It proceeds out of love.
  • It is a duty for which we were created for.
  • God is delighted with it.
  • God is delighted with the virtues that are in us, - Faith, Hope, Charity, Religion, Devotion, Humility etc. In fact our praises are a manifestation and exercise of all these virtues.

To praise God is 'Wholesome' because:

  • It shows our gratitude to Him.

The wonderful goodness of God has committed to us the sacred Scriptures. As you study God's word and pray to Him, believe that you will be rewarded. Remember, it was Jesus who taught us to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread." It is in prayer that we consult Him with our necessities but let us not forget to praise Him for in our praises we honour Him, and bless Him for His gifts.
